Sometimes I dream about writing a cheesy romcom screenplay in the vein of You've Got Mail. The protagonist is a florist who spends her days making bouquets for really romantic men to give to their girlfriends. She lives alone. Has cats. Messy hair. Listens to Jane Austen books on tape. Wears questionable floral prints and dirty men's workshirts and often both at the same time. (You see where this is going?)
She hosts a weekend long Valentine's Day flower shop at Castor and Pollux, and secretly hopes that a boy, any boy, will preorder a bouquet JUST FOR HER. Instead, her ex boyfriend orders one for his current girlfriend. (Autobiographical.)
I haven't worked out the ending yet but hey! I'm sure it involves a guy with enough balls to buy her flowers and enough sense to realize she won't care what they look like.
Stop by and say hello at my little flower shop in Castor and Pollux this Sunday (today!) from 1pm-6pm and on Tuesday the 14th from 12pm-7pm. The store is located at 238 W. 10th St between Bleeker and Hudson in the West Village. You will know me by my messy hair and off kilter flower crown.
I hope your ex didn't really buy flowers from you to give to someone else... but that would make a great part of a romcom plot!

Amy, I think you should definitely adapt this for a screenplay, semi-autobiographical like Mike Mills. I love(/hate) those " ... this is reality. I couldn't even make it up" moments.

If not for my current love and the sometimes unfair forces of nature that did not allow me to find you before I found her, I would have boarded a plane, the first time I laid eyes on you and your wonderful messy hair....
I worked three years ago on St Valentine Day at Vertumne (http://www.atelier-vertumne.fr). All day long I had to deliver all around Paris St Valentines's ravishing bouquets and at the end of the day nobody thought about buying flowers for me. I was tired and a little depressed.
ReplyDeleteThe following day, Clarisse, the owner, asked us trainees how was St Valentines (professionally speaking) and candidly I told her it was quite depressing delivering all these flowers and not getting one. She made me a beautiful composition with Hydrangeas, roses and weird ranunculus.
So I perfectly understand your post !
Your compositions are delightful, but I feel St Valentines can be quite hard for florists. But I hope you read the beautiful anonymous declaration just here above !

Write the ending of the story! Make it outrageously wonderful, adding a few minute details. Tuck it away somewhere, and you may just find it comes absolutely true.

ReplyDeleteAs an exflorist I always thought about a book too........but mine would have charactors like the floral truck drivers that spread gossip from shop to shop, the bridezillas, the married guys sending flowers to their girlfriends.....well you get the idea. I think your version would be more romantic.
