Sometimes I dream about writing a cheesy romcom screenplay in the vein of You've Got Mail. The protagonist is a florist who spends her days making bouquets for really romantic men to give to their girlfriends. She lives alone. Has cats. Messy hair. Listens to Jane Austen books on tape. Wears questionable floral prints and dirty men's workshirts and often both at the same time. (You see where this is going?)
She hosts a weekend long Valentine's Day flower shop at Castor and Pollux, and secretly hopes that a boy, any boy, will preorder a bouquet JUST FOR HER. Instead, her ex boyfriend orders one for his current girlfriend. (Autobiographical.)
I haven't worked out the ending yet but hey! I'm sure it involves a guy with enough balls to buy her flowers and enough sense to realize she won't care what they look like.

Stop by and say hello at my little flower shop in Castor and Pollux this Sunday (today!) from 1pm-6pm and on Tuesday the 14th from 12pm-7pm. The store is located at 238 W. 10th St between Bleeker and Hudson in the West Village. You will know me by my messy hair and off kilter flower crown.
I hope your ex didn't really buy flowers from you to give to someone else... but that would make a great part of a romcom plot!
ReplyDeleteYou deserve a super special guy, and those are worth waiting for. One day, your prince will come!
Happy Valentine's Day, and may all the joy you bring to others with your beautiful creations bounce right back to you!
Love the flowers, love the photography and love the new book (I hope you will finish it.
ReplyDeleteIf the ex part is true, I seriously hope there's a black widow hidden somewhere in those flowers.
ReplyDeleteAnd those movies always have a happy ending anyways, so I'm sure you'll find someone perfect!
I'd watch that movie in a nanosecond, just like I watched PS I love you more than I can recall, haha.
Ha! Sounds like fun viewing. Hmm who would play this florist, I wonder?!
ReplyDeleteI think it's brilliant! And you do create the most beautiful bouquets I've ever laid eyes on so I suppose your ex has good sense to buy from you, if I'm putting a positive spin on things. Wonderful photographs as always. You are quite inspiring.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the beautiful flower pictures! Spring is in the air! And I can't wait to see your movie! (You have seen "Imagine me and you" I presume?)
ReplyDeleteHave you seen Bed of Roses with Christian Slater and Mary Stuart Masterson? Mid-90's romantic comedy about a florist?
ReplyDeleteEverything you are doing is SO BEAUTIFUL!!! I'm so proud to know you! Congrats on being so talented Amy!
ReplyDeleteI think that if I were to ever work in a flower shop, I'd never want to go home-- it seems like such a dreamy job to have, and I'd get to meet the loveliest people, I'm sure!

Can you make that in to an actual movie? It sounds delightful! I hope you have a wonderful Valentine's Day this year with some cute plot twist :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful flower pics! :-)
ReplyDeleteIn the sake of honesty- the ex boy friend part is less awful than it sounds. We are pals and I'd be hecka po'ed if he bought them anywhere else.
ReplyDeleteYou've Got Mail is my favorite movie- so I predict that if you were to write this idea out- it would be sensational :) Do it!
ReplyDeleteAlso, beautiful arrangements.
...I'd fix his wagon and sneak some Poison Ivy in the mix! hee, hee, hee ;o)
ReplyDelete...I just read your comment up there and that's sweet that you both are pals, it's nice when it ends like that. He's lucky he had you if only for awhile.
...If I lived anywhere near you I would most certainly be visiting you today to buy flowers for moi. :o)
...And straighten that crown. ;o)
...Enjoy your day and thank you for sharing such lovely, lovely photos.
...Blessings :o)
Amy, I think you should definitely adapt this for a screenplay, semi-autobiographical like Mike Mills. I love(/hate) those " ... this is reality. I couldn't even make it up" moments.
ReplyDeletei love all these flowers! hope today goes well - it makes me wish i lived in nyc!

ReplyDeleteLovely.
Amy Merrick...you're a star!
ReplyDeleteYou should definitely write this! Love your images, as usual. :)
ReplyDeleteThis movie would be a huge hit, seriously, you should write it.
ReplyDeleteCould be a cute story...love the photography once again, beautiful blooms...
ReplyDeleteI secretly wish I could live in photographs you shoot...they always look slightly faded and vintage...gorgeous! Sharon
love it! I've had moments like these ('cept without the gorgeous flowers), so funny. you have a natural way with words, I enjoy your writing as much as your flowers. K
ReplyDeleteI think she will end up with the man who grows the flowers.......
ReplyDeletecan i be the neurotic friend who always falls for the wrong guy and says things like, 'you're right, you're right, i know you're right.' :) i am always crossing fingers for your imminent romantic future, lovely lady, i know there is some flower-purchasing gem out there, i just know it.
ReplyDeleteOh how I wish I were in NY today. I could use a bit of floral sustenance. But I will surely check out Castor and Pollux when I am in NY next month...
ReplyDeletethese photos are so beautiful... and I like the sound of this rom-com! she's always the intelligent one who gets the respectable gentleman in the end, anyway :)
DeleteThe photos are beyond gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI have dropped a few hints to the man about stopping by on Tuesday.
His name is Mick. It would be a wonderful valentines gifts to have flowers arranged by you.
HI Amy, your story will make a beautiful romantic movie! Your floral arrangements are beautiful! I am sure your store is beautiful too! I wish I knew about it when I was in NYC! My friends and I would have stopped by. All the best especially in your romantic future! Pamela
ReplyDeleteI would so watch that movie! You sound like the perfect protaganist. :)
ReplyDeleteYour arrangements are beautiful...I would be honored to have flowers made by you. I work in a small flower shop...not the designer...but it is fulfilling to be surrounded by such beauty everyday. You are very lucky.
xo Sarah
When can we see this film on the big screen? I'll look forward to it. :D Love your photos and your flowers!
ReplyDeleteOh how your book hits home for me as well. Not the florist part, I'm not. But for a guy who has balls and brains to realize what a true catch I am to just show up at my store with flowers for me. Oh how nice it would truly be.
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to tell you how much I love your pictures, your flowers and your words...
ReplyDeleteLove your photos and your flower arrangements are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI love that bouquet in the first picture. I so wish that I could send my husband to pick up one... but we live in Finland, bummer.
ReplyDeleteWe love our bouquet so much!
ReplyDeleteAs the daughter of a florist and 4th generation flower grower, I have long joked that I will marry the first man who is brave enough to give me flowers. No one has ever been brave enough!
ReplyDeleteNot to worry, Ames. The universe is conspiring to provide for you.
ReplyDeleteHappy Valentines Day Amy!
ReplyDeleteI view today as a general day of love - be it between friends, family or for a pet, and not just the love for someone that makes your heart flutter ;)
Thank you for showing us your amazing creations.
Don't cry, shopgirl!
ReplyDeleteHappy Valentine's Day to you!
Haha, this cracked me up. You simply have the best writing style. I'm always excited for a new post! HOW I wish I wasn't half way across the US and could have visited your shop! (Actually, I love Colorado, but I wouldn't mind a *visit* to your shop :). Keep it up! From one single artist another, remember, this will make your story even better some day.
ReplyDeleteDo NONE of the boys in Brooklyn have any sense? I would love to buy you flowers, especially a pretty bouquet like Amy Merrick's. Chin up, girl.
ReplyDeleteYour blog is so beautiful. I am your newest follower!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful flowers and beautiful photos. Great post!
ReplyDeleteAmy Merrick
ReplyDeleteI am a boy that will love to buy you flowers, any flowers and at any time, before and after Valentine. If not for my current love and the sometimes unfair forces of nature that did not allow me to find you before I found her, I would have boarded a plane, the first time I laid eyes on you and your wonderful messy hair....
I worked three years ago on St Valentine Day at Vertumne (http://www.atelier-vertumne.fr). All day long I had to deliver all around Paris St Valentines's ravishing bouquets and at the end of the day nobody thought about buying flowers for me. I was tired and a little depressed.
ReplyDeleteThe following day, Clarisse, the owner, asked us trainees how was St Valentines (professionally speaking) and candidly I told her it was quite depressing delivering all these flowers and not getting one. She made me a beautiful composition with Hydrangeas, roses and weird ranunculus.
So I perfectly understand your post !
Your compositions are delightful, but I feel St Valentines can be quite hard for florists. But I hope you read the beautiful anonymous declaration just here above !
Best wishes,
Elena
beautiful post and flowers... happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteSo happy to see your little studio and to hear about dreams coming true. Hopefully that next dream of a boy to buy you flowers is just around the corner:)
ReplyDeleteI would totally watch this movie. Hoping for a happy ending too!
ReplyDeletei too would watch the movie that is if you not only wrote it but got style it too!
ReplyDeletebeautiful, beautiful work and store front.
Write the ending of the story! Make it outrageously wonderful, adding a few minute details. Tuck it away somewhere, and you may just find it comes absolutely true.
ReplyDeleteI love the fourth photo! Such a beautiful bouquet.
ReplyDeleteI love the first photo! Very English and feminine.
ReplyDeleteI'd watch that film! Boys are so dumb.
ReplyDeleteFlower is wonderful gift of give by god. You share such beautiful and amazing images of flower shop. Its too good. Flower is very useful as gift, for decorating and so on.
ReplyDeleteBy golly, you are fantastically talented! I wish I could style, especially with flowers like you do....
ReplyDeleteAs an exflorist I always thought about a book too........but mine would have charactors like the floral truck drivers that spread gossip from shop to shop, the bridezillas, the married guys sending flowers to their girlfriends.....well you get the idea. I think your version would be more romantic.
ReplyDeleteFlower is too beautiful and amazing gift of given by. Its great nature beauty. You allot such lovely flower shop here. Its very useful and great post to every one.
ReplyDeleteI love the flowers...I think it,s amazing.
